Works representing years of study, dedicated research, and a lifetime of practice by 17 Cuesta College faculty artists are included in the next exhibit at the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery on Cuesta’s San Luis Obispo campus.
The Faculty Biannual, held every other year, opens Thursday, September 10 with a reception from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and a panel of faculty members from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 6304.
Moderated by gallery coordinator Timothy Stark, the panel conversation will cover the work in the exhibition and the relationship between studio practice and teaching.
“Every artist in this exhibition maintains a studio practice alongside a full teaching load,” Stark says. “These are artists who show in galleries and museums, curate exhibitions, make books, preserve centuries-old techniques, and run presses and foundries. That professional standing underpins their teaching.”
The exhibition is diverse and includes drawings, paintings, ceramics, sculptures, photography, prints, and design, along with other media. “There’s no assigned theme,” according to Stark. “The Biannual runs every other year, focusing on the artists who teach in these studios, so it documents the state of our faculty’s independent practices.”
The faculty artists represented don’t always exhibit in the medium they teach. “So the range on the walls is wider than the course catalog would suggest,” he says.
The exhibit, which ends October 16, includes recent work by Inga Dorosz, Marcia Harvey, Tony Hertz, Doug Highland, Guy Kinnear, Margaret Korisheli, Canguo Liu, Brittany Mojo, Mike Norton, David Prochaska, Lauren Rayburn, Sommer Roman, Susan Shaw, Mitch Springer, Timothy Stark, Kimberly Timbs, and Lela Shahrzad Welch.
“A student at Cuesta is learning from someone still at work in the field,” Stark says. “And this is the exhibition where the community gets to see that work.”
