An investigation into abuse and missing children at an Indian residential school ignites a reckoning on the nearby Sugarcane Reserve. Sugarcane, the debut feature film documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning.

On Sunday, November 16, the SLO Film Center, in partnership with yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini (ytt) Northern Chumash Tribe of SLO County and Region, presents a screening of the film, which is a tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life. It is preceded by the short film, Telling the Truth about California Missions by filmmaker Gary Robinson, who will attend the screening.

Sugarcane screened at the SLO International Film Festival in 2024, and was reviewed by SLO Review contributing writer Jim Gregory.
