Memorial scholarships honor Linna Thomas, Anna Unkovich, and Paul Alan Fahey.

Thanks to generous sponsors, the Central Coast Writers’ Conference at Cuesta College is offering scholarships to help cover this year’s registration fee of $300. The 41st annual conference is scheduled September 26-27.

Writing Contest

SLO County Public Libraries is sponsoring a writing contest that will award conference scholarships to 13 winners, one at each of its 13 branches. Entries will be judged on writing skills and compelling storytelling.

“It’s our library mission to promote literacy, and that includes encouraging our talented local authors,” Adult Services Coordinating Librarian Monique Matta said.

“Offering these scholarships helps to open doors for talented individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend,” according to CCWC Director Meagan Friberg. “Our goal is to nurture fresh perspectives, foster inclusivity, and ensure the brightest ideas are heard, no matter someone’s financial background.“

To enter, write and submit an essay or poem of 800 words or less inspired by this year’s conference theme: “It’s Time.” Deadline is 5 p.m. on September 5. The contest is open to adults 18 and over, with one entry per person. Entries may be submitted in person to your local branch librarian or online.

Memorial Scholarships

The Anna Unkovich, Paul Alan Fahey, and Linna Thomas Memorial Scholarships support writers—battling or recovering from a serious illness—who embody the spirit of resilience and have a love for the written word. They were created to honor the strength and legacy of their namesakes, all of whom gave generously to the literary world.

Unkovich was the conference’s volunteer coordinator for more than 10 years, Fahey was its first LGBTQ+ instructor and mentor, and Thomas was the co-founder and driving spirit behind Coalesce Book Store in Morro Bay.

“We are especially honored to extend support to those who are battling or recovering from illness while recognizing the strength, resilience, and insight they bring to our community,” Friberg said.

To apply, write and submit a story or poem of 800 words or less on the conference’s 2025 theme: “It’s Time.” Six scholarships will be awarded based on need and the writer’s authentic voice. Email submissions to CCWC Director Meagan Friberg no later than September 10.

Since 1984, the Central Coast Writers’ Conference at Cuesta College has supported writers of all levels. This year’s event includes hands-on workshops, keynote speakers, immersive breakout sessions, and a new teen program.
