Jane Austen meets Steve Jobs in a poignant pre-tech romance heralding the computer age when SLO Rep presents a staged reading of Ada and the Engine, an Ubu’s Other Shoe production, for three performances only May 23-24.
Lauren Gunderson wrote this music-laced story of love, friendship, and edgy dreams of the future. As the British Industrial Revolution dawns, the daughter of the flamboyant and notorious Lord Byron sees the boundless creative potential of the “analytic engines” invented by Charles Babbage, her friend and soul-mate. She envisions a whole new world where art and information converge.
The production is directed by Zach Johnson and the cast includes Amanda Thayer, Deborah Bertling, Gregory Gorrindo, Jacob Shearer, John Pillow, and Rosh Wright.
Ticket holders for the show’s opening night May 23 are invited to attend a 20th anniversary celebration of the staged reading series and its artistic director, Michael Michael Siebrass, before the show begins.
