Writers and visual artists of all ages and backgrounds are invited to submit original work inspired by personal journeys towards mental wellness for inclusion in the annual Opening Minds Art Show, opening May 2 at The Bunker in San Luis Obispo.
This year’s theme, “Unveiling the Mind–A Journey Towards Mental Wellness and Identity,” seeks to explore the intricate connections between mental health and identity through the power of creative expression. Visual artists working in two- and three-dimensional fine art media are invited to submit. Written submissions will complement visual art exhibits, broadening the conversation around mental wellness, and can include (but are not limited to) poetry, short stories, personal essays, and creative non-fiction.
The month-long show, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Month, has no entry fees, and one work of art will be chosen as the featured piece for the event. Submission deadline is March 24.
Since 1995, the Opening Minds Art Show has been a platform for creative voices to reduce stigma surrounding mental health and celebrate living mentally well. It is sponsored by Transitions-Mental Health Association, County of SLO Behavioral Health, SLO County Arts Council, and the Bunker.
