Festival Mozaic is hosting a special benefit screening of the soon-to-be-released film Maria at The SLO Film Center at the Palm Theatre on Friday, December 13 at 4 p.m.
Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie stars as opera singer Maria Callas, considered to be one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century.
Directed by Pablo Larrain, Maria follows the Greek-American soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. Her story is told in flashback during Callas’s final days in 1977 as she confronts her past and legacy.
Maria, which is already generating Oscar buzz for both Jolie and Larrain, earned top honors for the actress at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival. The movie is scheduled to stream on Netflix.
Director Larrain recently explained the film as “a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas who, after dedicating her life to performing for audiences around the world, decides finally to find her own voice, her own identity, and sing for herself.”
Tickets for Maria are $20 plus a $5 fee and are available online. The screening is a benefit for both Festival Mozaic and the SLO International Film Festival.
