The 2024 local celebration of Juneteenth, presented by the SLO County branch of the NAACP, is scheduled Saturday, June 15 with the theme “Art and Culture: A Glimpse of the Past & Present.”

Speakers, musical performances, a resource fair, silent auction and bake sale all take place from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Mission Plaza. Black art and history exhibits will be on display at Edna Contemporary and the SLO County History Center downtown.

Sylvia B. Henson, an IT professional and a Court Appointed Special Advocate for the County of SLO, acts as master of ceremonies, and Beatrice Nalubega, co-founder of the Starfish Education Fund in Central Uganda, is a speaker.

Music is provided by Lila Hood-The Blue Violin, the Vibesetters, House of Prayer Choir, Juan Leandro Gutierrez and Paul Gonzalez, Bay Love, and Ace Blizzy.

A soul food dinner is available 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and food tickets must be purchased in advance.

Other events taking place as part of this year’s Juneteenth celebration include a Black Artists Exhibit, hosted by Edna Contemporary June 7-28, and a screening of the reparations documentary The Cost of Inheritance June 19 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. The screening is free but please reserve seats in advance.
