New and traditional music, starting with “The Star-Spangled Banner” and followed by several outer space-themed compositions, is on a program for the San Luis Obispo County Band’s annual spring concert.
“Out of This World” begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Arroyo Grande. A tax-deductible donation of $10 is requested at the door.
Director Leonard Lutz will conduct selections including Sousa’s “Transit of Venus,” “Jupiter” from Holst’s “The Planets,” “Where No Man Has Gone Before” arranged by Paul Jennings, and soundtrack highlights from Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy.
The SLO County Band is the oldest continuously performing musical group in SLO County and is now in its 149th year playing for a wide variety of civic and patriotic events throughout the county. Performing more than 20 traditional band music concerts yearly, including monthly summer appearances at SLO Farmers Market and at numerous Portuguese Festivals, the band also performs on Memorial Day and Veterans Day in Los Osos Valley Memorial Park programs.
Band members come from throughout the county, and area musicians “rusty or not” are welcome to join; auditions are not required. Weekly rehearsals take place at the San Luis Adult School’s Taylor Gym on Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
