Basin Street Regulars presents Carl Sonny Leyland’s Boogie Woogie Boys and the Cuesta College #1 Jazz Combo at the Oceano Elks Lodge by the Beach from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 28.

Carl Sonny Leyland

Carl Sonny Leyland is known as a blues and boogie woogie specialist, but he also loves to play swing and rock ’n’ roll. His newest five-piece group presents all of these styles: front line trumpeter is Marc Caparone, tenor saxophonist is Mando Dorame, Sam Rocha is on bass, and the incomparable Josh Collazo is on drums. Their repertoire includes the sounds of Chicago, Kansas City, New Orleans, and other musical hot spots from jazz history.

Opening for the Boogie Woogie Boys is the Cuesta College #1 Jazz Combo featuring the Basin Street Regulars’ own young guitarist and scholarship beneficiary, David Venturini. Cuesta’s thriving jazz program fields up to 10 small jazz groups each semester of varying instrumentation and ability levels. Classes are open to any musician who signs up—beginner to professional. Each semester the best combos are chosen as lab groups for recording arts classes, and are given the opportunity to record high quality music in a professional environment.

Admission to the January 28 Hot Jazz Club dance concert is $10 for Basin Street Regulars members, $15 for non-members, and $5 for jammers. Elks members get a $5 discount. Memberships can be purchased at the event, food and drinks will be sold, and a generous dance area will be available.

Basin Street Regulars is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the performance and preservation of traditional “Hot Swingin’ Jazz.” Funds from this event support jazz camp scholarships for area teens and young adults.
