The Friends of Morro Elementary is hosting a showing of the documentary Botso, the Teacher from Tbilisi on Monday evening December 22 at the Bay Theatre in Morro Bay. The award-winning film, by moviemaker Tom Walters, is the story of one musician’s journey from Russia to San Luis Obispo County.

Botso Korisheli founded the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony, which continues to provide quality orchestral training and performance opportunities for the youth of the Central Coast.

He taught music for decades to Morro Bay elementary school students, instilling in them such a passion for music that many became professional musicians themselves. World renowned symphony and opera conductor Kent Nagano is perhaps his most famous student.

The event is a fundrasiser for Friends of Morro Elementary, who along with the City of Morro Bay are working to purchase the 90-year-old Morro Elementary School property and create a civic center.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with refreshments available for purchase. The 90-minute film begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by short vignettes from the director and former students and co-workers.

Tickets may be purchased online or at the door, with a ticket donation of $15 suggested.
