The Cuesta College Music Department hosts its first CD release in eight years and its first launch concert since 2012 on Saturday, November 7 at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center on the college’s San Luis Obispo campus.

The evening CD Release Concert and the “Cuesta Jazz” album both feature Cuesta’s Big Band, a faculty combo, two student combos, and Vocé, showing the college’s range of instrumental and vocal jazz. Nearly all the musicians from the recording are returning to play.

“Bringing these musicians together for one concert gives our community a chance to hear the variety of work happening here,” according to Cuesta performing arts department chair and jazz instructor Ron McCarley. “And to celebrate a recording we’re proud to share.”

Special guest Ernie Watts (right) performed on the CD alongside George Stone.

McCarley says the album shows what makes jazz at Cuesta College special. “It’s the creativity of the students, the dedication of the faculty, and the joy of making music together.”

The album’s release also honors recently retired faculty member George Stone and his achievements as an educator, recording engineer, composer, and musician. Stone served as head recording engineer, managed the recording processes, wrote a piece for the album, and played on the faculty tracks.

“George brought his care and musicianship to every part of this project,” says faculty member John Knutson. “It’s meaningful to have this recording as a lasting example of his work with our students and colleagues, and to celebrate it with the community that has supported our music programs.”

As Cuesta’s music department shifts toward video and streaming content, “Cuesta Jazz” may be its final CD release, thus helping to preserve a special chapter in Cuesta College’s music program.

CDs will be available for purchase at the concert. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students with ID, and free parking is available. Arrive early to meet the musicians and enjoy a glass of wine on the CPAC lobby patio.
