Terrence McNally’s two-act play about the business of producing a play on Broadway gets a one-weekend run (with five performances) at Studio of the Performing Arts in Grover Beach November 20-23.

It’s Only a Play is a love letter to the blood, sweat, and tears that go into what’s known as the “Great American Theatre.”

Anyone who has been involved in live theatre or has seen a show on Broadway, on a national tour, in a regional theatre or in a hometown community theatre will relate to this rousing comedy.

On the eve of their opening night, the cast and crew of a new play have gathered in a lush New York apartment to celebrate their impending New York Times review. The cast of characters includes a washed up drama critic, a budding director, a seasoned actress and a “star to be” (among others) who provide a full taxonomy of theatrical references old and new—and of course many four letter words.

The (real) cast, an ensemble of Central Coast favorites, includes Hank Wethington, Gary Borjan, Sarah Ruth Smith, Laura Richie, Tom Ammon, Kaveh Naficy, and Dakota Simpson—who also directs.
