In 2025, more than 80 volunteer tutors from The Literacy Connection, a program of SLO County Public Libraries, have helped 184 local adult learners improve their reading, writing and English language skills.

That accomplishment and others were celebrated October 10 at the historic Dallidet Adobe and Gardens with an event recognizing the transformative power of literacy for local families.
“We believe that literacy is a fundamental human right,” said Adult Literacy Coordinator Michelle Haddad. “It’s a testament to the idea that everyone deserves the essential skills needed for personal growth, empowerment, and full participation in our community.”

Haddad highlighted the progress of many participants, including those who gained the confidence to step into a new job, earn a driver’s license, and even become a first-time voter. She invited some of them to speak.
“I want to thank you,” said one of the adult learners at the event. “Now I can talk with people—my neighbors, my friends in the library. I love America!”
One woman who spoke is on the waiting list for a tutor. “This program shows that humanity is alive,” she said. “The tutors dedicate their time, and learners work hard to learn. I’m so happy the library has this program. I look forward to joining.”

Learners often singled out their tutors or staff members, mentioning their commitment to them and the program. “I still remember the first day I came and you assigned a tutor to work with me,” one learner said. “Thank you, Michelle, for your dedication.”
Volunteers Laysha Ostrow, Cathy Fields, Melanie Popovich, and John Verdi were singled out as having donated the most number of hours tutoring.
“I enjoy meeting folks from far and abroad,” Verdi said. He and the 80 other trained tutors in the program this year collectively donated 4,235 volunteer hours, according to Haddad.
Tutors work with adult learners one-on-one, in small groups, and in a Family Learning program that offers family story time, simultaneous parent/child learning, and family literacy events at the library.
The free services are tailored to the unique needs of each learner, and prioritize individualized learning plans that address specific goals and challenges.
