Friends are rallying behind the wife of a popular Central Coast syndicated cartoonist following a recent medical emergency.

Teresa Rubin, wife of “Rubes” creator Leigh Rubin, suffered a catastrophic brain injury in early January. Following initial treatment at Marian Hospital in Santa Maria, she was transported 300 miles to a northern California specialized facility.

The longtime school teacher is currently in a coma and on life support.

Leigh Rubin has moved north to be with his wife, but plans to continue drawing the daily cartoon, currently syndicated to more than 400 media outlets worldwide.

A Go Fund Me campaign has been established, with a goal of $50,000 to help the family with their immediate living expenses.

Reached by phone Friday morning, Leigh Rubin said there had been no change in his wife’s condition, but he remains hopeful.

“We’ve been together since 1980,” he said. “Teresa has seen my entire career. She taught private and then public school and then taught piano. She still played the piano every day. God, I miss hearing that.”
