Festival Mozaic will showcase the talents of Grammy-nominated pianist and composer John Novacek in several performances during October.
As the organization’s 2024 Artist-in-Residence, Novacek is celebrating his 20th anniversary season with the festival. Noted for his versatility and virtuosity, he has performed internationally, blending classical and contemporary repertoire in innovative ways.
“This October Residency is a wonderful opportunity for our community to engage with an artist of John Novacek’s caliber,” according to Festival Mozaic Music Director Scott Yoo. “His talent and passion for music will inspire and captivate everyone who attends these events.”
Novacek’s October residency marks the beginning of Festival Mozaic’s 2024-2025 season, which continues with the fall and winter editions of the San Luis Obispo Music Festival coming up in November and February.
Novacek’s first appearance is a piano master class at Allan Hancock College on October 17. Master classes are great opportunities for young performers, with each student playing a selection after which Novacek offers constructive feedback—suggestions on musical ideas, practice techniques, and more. Tickets to observe the event are free, but registration is encouraged
On October 18 Novacek will present a discussion/recital conducted “in the round” with a Q&A session with the audience at Cuesta College’s Harold J. Miossi CPAC Experimental Theater. Covering composers of the Romantic Generation that are featured on his recital program scheduled October 19, he offers his expert take on pieces from Bach, Schumann, Bartók, and Liszt. Tickets are $35.
Novacek’s matinee recital on October 19 in Patty Boyd Concert Hall at Allan Hancock College features Bach’s “Italian Concerto,” Schumann’s “Kreisleriana,” Bartók’s “Piano Sonata,” and Liszt’s “Liebestraum No. 3” and “Rhapsodie espagnole.” Ticket prices start at $25.
The pianist heads to Libretto in Paso Robles on October 20 to complete his performance schedule with “Afternoon with John,” an intimate event where audiences can meet Novacek in a casual setting. He will perform selections from his repertoire, spanning genres from classical to jazz to contemporary, while the audience enjoys wine and appetizers in an unique jazz club atmosphere. Tickets are $90.
