Friends of the Santa Maria Public Library and AAUW of Santa Maria present an author discussion and book-signing with Jacqueline St. Joan, author of The Shawl of Midnight, on Thursday, April 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Santa Maria Public Library.
The Shawl of Midnight is a standalone sequel to My Sisters Made of Light, St Joan’s first novel that explored a Pakistani family’s determination to educate women and defend human rights. A coming-of-age story, a family saga, and a hero’s journey set in Pakistan, India, and Kashmir, the book picks up the story of young Nafeesa 18 years later, and suggests, according to St. Joan, “how we might discover through our own pressures and actions what we are shaped by—exactly what we are made of, and where home truly is.”
