Author and cartoonist Leigh Rubin will serve as the keynote speaker for the 40th annual Central Coast Writers Conference, scheduled for October 5 at Cuesta College.

Social media and writing consultant Brian Schwartz returns for a second year as conference director of the one-day event.

“We want to build on last year’s conference, which means not just writers,” Schwartz says. “We’re interested in attracting creatives of all types.”

Rubin, who lives on the Central Coast, started cartooning back in 1978 and has more than 20 books to his credit. His internationally syndicated cartoon Rubes is currently distributed to hundreds of newspapers and media outlets worldwide.

Since 2018, Rubin has served as the first Cartoonist-in-Residence at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. His new book is Think Like a Cartoonist: A Celebration of Humor and Creativity.

“The 40th is a special year for us,” Schwartz says. “We’d like to bring back some of our more popular faculty presenters from the last 40 years.”

Conference faculty and offerings are still being finalized, but registration is now open with the Super Early Bird rate of $199 expiring April 20, followed by the Early Bird rate of $249 before July 31. Day-of registration will be $349.
