Now is the time for kids, teens and adults to indulge in “to be read” reading lists, explore summer activities, and track books and hours read. Yes, the annual SLO County Library summer reading challenge is back.
Stop by your favorite SLO County library branch to pick up a Summer Reading and Activities Guide, or download a digital guide from the website. This challenge is free for all ages and abilities until August 9. Nearly all types of books count towards reading progress, including audiobooks.
Up-for-the-challenge participants can earn prizes, depending on the number of hours read. At five hours of reading you can spin a wheel to win stickers or bookmarks. Ten hours allows you to choose one book to keep from a selection of titles. With 20 hours or more you get a limited edition graphic canvas tote bag while supplies last.
Libraries are also hosting free all-ages events including reptile shows, magic shows, and nature presentations with a SLO County focus.
Alongside the summer reading challenge, explore the “Cabinet of Curiosities” map included in the Summer Guide, a bonus featured event. “You can see something cool, curious, or just plain weird at any of our libraries this summer,” according to library spokesperson Erica Thatcher. “Just follow the Quail Trail map in our Summer Guide.”
