Vocal Arts Ensemble presents its summer concert series, “Sing a New Day,” at three venues May 29-June 1.

Melody Svennungsen, conductor and artistic director, leads the three dozen members of the choral group with the assistance of John Knutson, associate director, and accompanist Judy Robertson.

“It has been said that where words leave off, music begins,” Svennungsen says. “But the very words we share through our songs are healing, happy and hopeful.”

The collection of contemporary pieces with lush harmonies and beautiful melodies includes “Earth Song,” “Psalm of Life,” “How Can I Keep from Singing,” “Bright Morning Stars Are Rising,” and “Joyful, Joyful.”

From introspective poetry to gospel tunes to vocal jazz, Svennungsen expects audiences will not only be entertained, but “come away with a renewed sense of hope and wonder for this gift of life on our amazing planet.”

Concerts will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29 at Trilogy Monarch Dunes in Nipomo; at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at the Harold J. Miossi Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cuesta College; and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1 at First Presbyterian Church in San Luis Obispo.
