Last year, photographer Mark Dektor began posting intriguing black-and-white portrait photographs of Cambria residents online. With the community’s encouragement, he started posting more and more portraits of townspeople from all over Cambria.

People couldn’t wait to see who he would feature next. Dektor seemed to have a unique way of capturing not just people’s images, but their personalities.

Folks at the Cambria Center for the Arts took notice, and thus was born an exhibit designed to capture “the spirit of the Cambrian tribe.”

I am drawn to the intimate nature of still photography as it allows me to get in close, one on one, with my subjects and to depict their essence, their true and authentic personality.” — Mark Dektor

Dektor’s photos, collected in an exhibit entitled HOMETOWN, will be on display from February 22 to April 27 at the Cambria Center for the Arts Studio.

An artist reception and presentation hosted by the Cambria Historical Society is scheduled on opening day, February 22, at 4:30 p.m., and will include information on Cambria’s history in addition to the opportunity to meet and speak with Dektor about his process and his favorite portraits.

“I am drawn to the intimate nature of still photography as it allows me to get in close, one on one, with my subjects and to depict their essence, their true and authentic personality,” the photographer says on his website. “That’s what drives me.”

Dektor is also a director and cinematographer. His skill shooting non-actor testimonials has led to prestigious and wide-ranging assignments for Mercedes, Ford, Maybelline, Suave, Dove, and the Chicago Blackhawks.
