Experience the beauty and power of nature through song at Embracing the Earth, a Canzona Women’s Ensemble concert on Sunday, March 9, at 3 p.m. at San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church.
Presented in collaboration with The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, the program showcases choral works that explore humanity’s deep connection to the natural world.
A highlight of the concert is the overdue reprise of Meredith Brammeier’s “To the God of Light and Shadow,” set to poetry by former SLO County Poet Laureate Bonnie Young. Originally commissioned by Canzona and premiered in 2013, the piece was later performed on tour in Canada and remains a poignant reflection on light, shadow, and the natural world.
The repertoire also includes “Metsa Telegramm” and “This We Know,” which remind us of the importance of protecting the earth’s forests and honoring our interdependence with nature, “The Peace of Wild Things” that provide a sense of solace, and “In Time of Silver Rain,” which celebrates nature’s resilience and renewal.
“Celebrating nature and our connection to the earth is indeed fertile ground for beautiful and inspired choral music,” according to Canzona’s co-artistic director Jill Anderson.
“We are fortunate to live in a stunning locale,” says Canzona’s other artistic director, Cricket Handler. “Many of our songs remind us to appreciate the nature that surrounds us here on the Central Coast. We hope this concert inspires audiences to reflect on their own connection to the earth and its natural wonders.”
Founded in 2009, Canzona is SLO County’s all-women choral ensemble. The members present two concerts per season, and often collaborate with other artists on the Central Coast, including poets, composers, dancers, and musicians of all ages.
