When fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed “low life scum” Naoise & Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip-hop act like no other.

That’s the premise of the energetic new film Kneecap, the “mostly” true story of how three Irish rappers become the unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement to save their mother tongue. But first, the trio must overcome police, paramilitaries, and politicians trying to silence their defiant sound.

Kneecap is a “fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic” in which the members of the group play themselves, laying down a global rallying cry for the defense of native cultures.

The film is playing at the SLO Film Center at the Palm Theatre.
