A concert by the first all-female professional mariachi in the U.S. kicks off the Cinco de Mayo weekend on Friday, May 3 at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande.

Internationally lauded Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, established in 1994, became the first female mariachi group to break out of local-level recognition to international stardom with original compositions, arrangements, and interpretations of mariachi classics.

They have shared the stage with world-renowned musicians Vicki Carr, Guadalupe Pineda, and Lucha Villa; played private concerts for superstars George Harrison and John Travolta; and debuted at the Hollywood Bowl. They even performed for a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Obama The White House.

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles is paving the way for other female mariachi groups to exist at the professional level. Reyna has broken stereotypes in a musical landscape of songs that are often written by and for men.

With both American and Latin Grammy nominations, their internationally distributed albums include Solo Tuya, El Mejor Mariachi Femenino del Mundo, Compañeras, Entre Mariachi y Corazón, Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles, and their most recent, ¡Que Vivan Las Mujeres!.
