The San Luis Obispo County Arts Council is looking for a SLO County-based artist or artist team to submit qualifications for a 3D sculptural element to be placed in the new Oceano Highway Mainstreet Community Space in Oceano.

The project is part of the Clean California State Highway Beautification Program, sponsored by Caltrans with support from the SLO Council of Governments.

The Oceano Highway Mainstreet Community Space is a small pedestrian plaza that will be constructed at the intersection of Highway 1 and Beach Street and 17th Street in Oceano.  Construction of the community space will begin in late spring of 2024.

Requests for Qualifications are due on April 30, 2024. Up to three finalists will receive $500 stipends and will be invited to submit proposals. A panel committee will make a decision in May, with the selected artist or artist team receiving $12,000 for the final piece.

SLO County Arts will host a virtual webinar with more information from 4 to 6 p.m. on April 17. Artist/mentor Jenny Chang will lead a section on “Portfolio Kits” to assist with submissions.

Artists are invited to attend the webinar and/or submit their qualifications online.
