The San Luis Obispo Master Chorale will perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 21 in a rare concert given without the Master Chorale Orchestra in Harold Miossi Hall at the SLO Performing Arts Center.
Rachmaninoff’s signature chorale work has become a fixture in repertoire, standing as the crowning achievement of the “Golden Age” of Russian Orthodox sacred choral music. In its dynamically diverse 70 minutes of a cappella singing, members of the Master Chorale will be spread out over the PAC stage.
Special guest singer Alexander Mayang is one of the world’s few oktavists (the lowest voice role found in a choir). The oktavist is integral to the piece, and his dark, resonant voice will be heard throughout the concert.
All-Night Vigil is sponsored by Joan Gellert-Sargen.
Editor’s Note: Prior to the All-Night Vigil performance, you can attend a free presentation by Dr. Vladimir Morosan, “Rachmaninoff and His All-Night Vigil: Inspirations” at the Performing Arts Center Pavilion beginning at 1:15 p.m.
